InBetween platform
State
Completed (1999 -2009)
Concept
The In-Between project was a collaborative project for the creation of an endless multicultural virtual neighborhood on the Web. It started as an initiative of the Multimedia – Hypermedia Lab of the Athens School of Fine Arts, and gradually included participants from different Universities (see project site for details). The participants could insert, through an on-line form, an audiovisual description of their house, different audiovisual elements as well as other information to the dynamic database and their house automatically became member of the virtual neighborhood. It was a simple prototype of a social network that appeared, as a concept and primitive implementation, before Facebook.
Educational approach
Students participated, through on-site workshops, to the enrichment of the virtual neighborhood with content, but also by expressing their proposals and reflections on virtual life and communication inside such spaces (it is highlighted that Facebook and other social media were not well known and students were not sensitized towards them). My role was to develop the back-end technological infrastructure of the InBetween platform. I also participated to all events, installations, and on-site workshops.
Technology
Adobe Flash (now deprecated), Apache-PHP-MySQL
