Dr. Stavroula (Voula) Zoi is a computer scientist, researcher and member of Laboratory Instructors of Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA), since 2004.
She has been teaching specialized technological aspects to artists and has been conducting research in the intersection of Art, Technology, and Education, in the scope of the Multimedia-Hypermedia Laboratory and the Greek-French Master “Art, virtual reality and multiuser systems of artistic expression”, between Athens School of Fine Arts and Paris-8 University (Département Arts et Technologies de l’Image (ATI)). She has also taught in the ASFA Master Program “Digital Forms of Art” (2004-2013).
She holds a BSc from the University of Ioannina, Department of Computer Science (1997) and a PhD from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) (2003). Her PhD research focused on specific aspects of applying Quality-of-Service mechanisms in complex networked interactive multimedia (e.g. virtual reality) through the Internet. Parallel with her PhD studies at the NTUA, she developed research across the spectrum of interactive multimedia, in the scope of Greek-funded and European-funded research programs (1998-2008), with emphasis on applications for cultural management. She also participated to the organization of know-how workshops in Universities in Jordan, Egypt and Tunis.
Her educational – scientific activity in ASFA concerns the creative use of contemporary technologies in artistic education and expression (e.g. tools for digital creation, management of image-sound-action, complex platforms for hybrid artworks, educational virtual spaces, artworks for smart devices, algorithms for art, human-computer communication in the context of artworks). She has actively participated in the organization and technological curation of artistic educational exhibitions with real-time digital artworks for the general public (e.g. “Enter the game” project in the Art Science Technology Festival in the 81st TIFF, Researcher’s Night at NTUA in 2017, Erasmus+ @postasis Multiplier Events (www.apostasis.eu) in Athens setc).
From 2004 up to 2010 she participated in the implementation of international seminars with other European Schools of Art Studies, in the scope of Erasmus IP Programmes and Summer Universities. During those seminars, original ideas were cultivated and platform prototypes were developed targeting collaborative artistic education, through participatory virtual spaces. These actions were continued in the scope of the Greek-French Master between ASFA and Paris-8 University, and also, in the scope of the Erasmus+ program @postasis: Virtual Artistic Laboratory (coordinator Athens School of Fine Arts, Scientific Director Prof. Manthos Santorineos) in which Stavroula Zoi has a very active role in the overall coordination, in collaboration with Prof. Manthos Santorineos. In @postasis (www.apostasis.eu), a multiuser platform is being developed for supporting distance collaborative educational actions and real-time artistic experimentations, with the simultaneous support of large-scale events among interconnected physical and virtual spaces. Educational seminars have taken place with students and professors from Universities in Greece, as well as the Secondary Art School of Gerakas.
During her multi-year collaboration with Fournos Centre for Digital Culture, she has participated in the development of experimentations with platforms for multimedia spectacles and performances (managing images, sounds, actions, and theatrical lights).
Her scientific research activity focuses on the intersection between technological thinking and creative artistic expression, aiming to formulate contemporary proposals for humanities, for the creative industries, or other spaces that use elements from both fields.
She is a member of FournosLab interdisciplinary research group, and a member of the ACM Greek SIGCHI committee.
